New Cathedral
In 1950, Bishop Neville Gorton and Provost Richard Howard set a competition for the country’s finest architects to construct the new cathedral. Basil Spence’s contemporary and controversial design was the winner and his cathedral, which took 6 years to complete, was consecrated in 1962. Dedicated to St. Michael, the cathedral not only stands as a monument to 1950s architecture but also houses a rich collection of contemporary art.
